Romance in Historical Fiction?

Who’s to say that there wasn’t a connection made before Roger came to Italy at 17 years old? What would that connection have looked like? It’s easy to imagine a scenario where a relationship was started, but then circumstances led to the two young lovers falling apart and Roger leaving for Italy. So now all that remains is to create that relationship through fiction.
